The answer to Chilton's longevity is in his biography. Jefferson Davis felt indebted to him for Chilton's help during the Mexican War. Lee no doubt was aware of the incident and had no wish to provide his chief discomfort. Witness how long Davis kept Bragg in his post in the West regardless of the effect on the war effort. Many historians faulr Davis for maintaining his friends and acquaintances in positions of responsibility long after they had proven worthless.
