Three cigars wrapped in piece of paper.  The fate of the Union came down to just that in 1862.

It is good that war is so terrible, lest we grow fond of it.

Who smoked those cigars is unknown, but the paper wrapped about them was Robert E. Lee's Special Orders 191 which had just been discovered by soldiers of the 27th Indiana under the command of General Alpheus Starkey Willims of Detroit while bivouacked on a former Confederate campground east of Frederick, Maryland on the thirteenth of September 1862.  It would become the turning point of the American Civil War and, perhaps, of American and World history.
